Most of the scenes were just shot around my place, as I really didn't want to have to gather a whole bunch of friends and then have to cart around to various places. Most of the scenes with the exception of the video store, hospital and bar scenes were shot on the same day.
Although it's supposed to be about MMORPGs (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games; pronounced MA-MOR-PER-GER) in general, really it's mostly based on Blizzard's World of Warcraft, because it's the one I play :]
Hanxiang is wearing a Vikings cap, Dave is wearing a Vikings jersey, and I'm wearing the replica Vikings helmet. This video has more purple pride than any other video I've made.
The Ninja-Looting scene involved Dave ninja-looting a video called Cloudsong from Hanxiang. For the full scoop on the Cloudsong incident, check out this link. Okay, the link doesn't work anymore. Just google "Stole my cloudsong" and you should be fine.
Dave yells "Leeroy Jenkins" whenever he ninjas something. This is in reference to a pretty famous Warcraft video, although it's got nothing to do with ninja-looting. Click on the link and check it out! It's pretty funny shit.
Hanxiang offers to buy the girls Moonberry Juice, which is something you consume in WoW to regain mana.
The Night Elf drawing in the end credits (and wallpapers) is depicted wearing a Moonberry tank-top, with the logo parodying a very famous family restaurant franchise. She's also wearing the Night Elf emblem around her neck.
Nick says "Get yourself an epic car, you nub!" In WoW, the most elite of 1337 players own really expensive epic mounts. Epic mounts are impressive-looking mounts which only go marginally faster than regular mounts. Basically you buy one just to flaunt the fact that you had a ridiculous amount gold to spare, and to ride it around in Ogrimmar to gloat over the noobs who only have regular mounts or god-forbid WALK around Azeroth.
For the non-gamers out there, here's a glossary of terms used in Woog: n00b - A newbie player; someone devoid of skill. 1337 - "Leet", spelt in 1337-speak. Someone who is elite; the antonym of n00b. pwn - The 1337 spelling of "own". To own someone is to conquer them.
I work at the video store depicted in the video. If you recognize it, chances are I've made you pay late fees before. The Lazy Lizard is the bar next door that we sometimes go to after closing the store.
The interesting facts in the end credits are:
-
Casual players are interested in playing a few hours a week, but many hardcore gamers play more than 40 hours a week.
- As of July 2005, World of Warcraft has 3,500,000 players worldwide, making it the most popular MMORPG in the world.
- Companies dedicated to farming or acquiring the virtual property of players and then selling them to other players have established themselves and have created a virtual market that is said to be worth $880 million US dollars.
- A controversial study was commissioned by the National Institutes of Health in 2003 to assess the long term health risks associated with extended play of MMORPG's. While the study is not yet accepted by the general medical community (pending further results), it showed that participants who play more than 20 hours per week of MMORPG's suffer from increased obesity and nutritional imbalance as well as an increased propensity for bone loss, muscle atrophy and impotence.
During my research, I think I found like 5 or more cases of MMORPG-related fatalities. Some guy shot himself because some loot he's been after got ninja-ed, some cases where people have murdered their friends because they didn't return in-game money... EGADS! And some people who just plain died because they played for 72 hours straight or something.
